The road to becoming an assistant is not an easy one. In order to seriously consider a medical career in anesthesiology assisting, one needs to meet the specific qualifications. Here’s how to become one.

1. To become an anesthesiologist assistant a bachelor’s degree that includes <em>pre-medical</em> coursework such as biology and chemistry is a pre-requisite. One of the best options is to earn a bachelor’s degree in biology, as the program covers many of the pre-med courses needed to continue education, including anatomy, biology, chemistry, physics, genetics, physiology and pharmacology. A science-related bachelor’s degree is usually a good choice, but many subjects will help lay the groundwork for this career. Choosing a <span style=”text-decoration: underline;”>reputable college or university</span> with a good science or pre-med program always adds credibility. Completion of the undergraduate coursework is not really the start, one has to go through a lot more training and experience in the field. An internship or other types of hands-on training is usually included in the program.

2. Obtaining a mere bachelor’s degree in the sciences is not enough. One needs to take post-graduate studies in the field as well. Programs are designed for prospective anesthesiologist assistants who want to work as part of an anesthesia team, which also includes nurses, a technician and an anesthesiologist. Usually twenty-four months are required to complete a program which includes classroom instruction and a clinical experience. The basic techniques used by anesthesiologists are taught, along with topics such as airway management, anesthesia delivery methods and instrumentation.

3. The final step is to get certified. To accomplish this, one will need to apply for certification at the National Commission for Certification of Anesthesiologist Assistants or related body in the said country. The <strong>process of certification</strong> will require one to pass an examination that is conducted all year round. The process may require one to be enrolled or having to complete an accredited training program.
