The Top Anesthesiologist Assistant Programs
If you are interested in becoming an anesthesiologist assistant, postgraduate education is necessary. Therefore you will need to get a master’s degree. Also, you cannot just get a master’s degree from any university or college. It must be accredited from American Board of Anesthesiologists. There are currently four states in the USA that offer accredited anesthesiology assistant programs.
There were many programs to choose from when it was time for me to pick a school. This flexibility allowed me to choose the location closest to my house!
A job as an anesthesiologist assistant is very similar to a career as a CRNA, certified registered nurse anesthetist. However, an anesthesiologist assistant serves as a direct assistant to the head anesthesiologist who must go through a lot more training and education than that of an anesthesiologist assistant. Many people think that anesthesiology is the same as analgesia but they are really different. With anesthesia, a patient will lost consciousness while with analgesia; a patient will only have pain relief in a certain area and would remain fully conscious. That’s why this field of medicine has extremely strict educational requirements and it is government by a central organization.
There are a few different states offering programs in anesthesiologist assistant. Other states don’t employ anesthesiologist assistants in the medical field and only employ fully education anesthesiologists. Having an assistant is a great benefit for an anesthesiologist. These are the following states that have accredited university anesthesiologist assistant programs:
• Florida: Nova South Eastern University
• Missouri: University of Missouri
• Georgia: Emory and South University
• Ohio: Case Western University
The above listed schools differ slightly in terms of the program structure. However, in general they are very similar when it comes to the courses and the requirements since they are all accredited. The main different between an anesthesiologist assistant and a CRNA is that to become a CRNA, you must first complete a nursing degree while for an anesthesiologist assistant, you don’t need to complete any nursing or other health care degree. Nevertheless, these programs are extremely competitive therefore any relevant experience in the health care industry can help you get accepted in these programs.
To get into these programs, for the most part you will need a bachelor degree which is equivalent to 60 university-level credits. After that you will need to complete the program and then pass the main exam to receive your certification. Training may also be another requirement. Checking for the certification requirements in your state or country can help you get more familiar with them.
