What is an Anesthesiologist Assistant Residency Program?

There are strict education requirements that need to be complete if one wants to become an anesthesiologist assistant. Following graduation from an anesthesiologist assistant education program at an accredited university, a prospective anesthesiologist assistant must enroll in an anesthesiology residency program. In these residency programs, the prospective anesthesiologist assistant will work with professional anesthesiologist in the surgical field that they desire working in.

A residency program provides a student with real-world education in this field. They can also choose to specialize in certain specific anesthesiology field such as pediatric surgery, cardiac surgery, different pain management, critical care surgery among others. Each of these different surgical fields requires different procedures. Prepping a patient for a cardiac surgery will be much different than doing so for a pediatric surgery. There may also be different related procedures that the anesthesiologist assistant may be required to understand or also even perform.

Before the anesthesiologist assistant residency program, you will need to complete a four year bachelor degree in pre-medicine. Following the bachelor degree, you will still need to do extra specialty anesthesiologist assistant medical courses. The residence program can take up to four years but you will be working and getting paid. Furthermore, during the residency program, you will be working towards getting your anesthesiologist assistant certification. Every state, country or location has their own requirements for the residency program.

The structure of the residency program is also depending on the area of specialty. Depending on which field you will want to work in, you will need to gain the relevant experience, training and knowledge and the time to achieve this can differ from field to field. In pediatric anesthesiology, you must learn about caring for kids and children and there is a lot of training required. People that require critical care anesthesiology can be there for a number of different problems and the residency program can be lengthy in order to gain experience with all the different issues that can arise.
